The Greatest Commandment Revisited

Luke 10:25-28
25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”[a]
28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

Ephesians 4:22-24
22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Jesus' command to "love your neighbor as yourself" contains a hidden prerequisite: you must know and properly love yourself first. This isn't narcissism—it's spiritual health. The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote about putting off the "old self" and putting on the "new self." But how can you shed what you don't understand? How can you crucify your flesh if you don't know what drives it? Today, ask God to help you see yourself clearly—not through the world's distorted mirror, but through His eyes. Emotional maturity and spiritual maturity cannot be separated. To love others well, you must first understand the person God created you to be. Authentic love flows from authentic self-awareness rooted in Christ.
