The Power of Presence

Job 2:11
11 When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.  12 When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. 13 Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.

Job's friends initially responded to his suffering by simply sitting with him in silence for seven days. This mirrors how God allowed Elijah to voice his pain without judgment. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do for someone who is hurting is to be a "benevolent witness" - present, listening, and validating their pain without trying to fix it. Today, consider who in your life might need this kind of presence. How can you create a safe space for others to share their struggles? Also, reflect on your own need for this kind of support. Are you allowing others to be present with you in your pain?
