The Word That Holds You Up

Romans 15:4 (NLT)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

Psalm 119:105-112 (NIV)
105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.
107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.
108 Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws.
109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.
110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.
111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Devotional: Scripture was not given merely to inform us. It was given to sustain us. Romans 15:4 tells us that the writings of God produce endurance and encouragement, and from those two things, hope is born. Endurance is not something you manufacture through willpower. It is something that grows in you as you immerse yourself in the promises of God. When stress is loudest, the Word of God needs to be closest. The psalmist said God's Word was a lamp to his feet for a reason. In dark and uncertain terrain, you do not need to see the whole road. You only need enough light for the next step.

Reflection: When trouble comes, what is your first source of counsel? Is it God's Word, or do you reach for other voices first?

Practical Application: Find a topical Bible or Bible promise book, either in print or through an app. Look up five scriptures related to a specific worry you are facing and read them aloud once each day this week.
