Wednesday: The Law Written On Hearts

Jeremiah 31:31-34
31 “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord.
33 “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the Lord.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the Lord. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

Romans 8:1-4
1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Devotional: The old covenant demanded righteousness but provided no power to achieve it. We tried and failed repeatedly to live up to God's holy standards. But God, in His mercy, promised a new covenant—not rules on stone tablets, but His Spirit dwelling within us. This is the beauty of Pentecost: God writes His law directly on our hearts and minds. You no longer struggle alone against sin's power. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you, empowering you to fulfill what the law requires. When you feel inadequate or defeated, remember that the Lawgiver Himself resides within you, providing everything you need to walk in righteousness and freedom.
