The Memorial of Freedom

Deuteronomy 6:4-9
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Luke 22:14-20
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Devotional: Moses commanded Israel to remember—to build memorials, to teach their children, to never forget what God had done to deliver them from Egypt. Memorials matter because memory fuels gratitude, and gratitude fuels faithfulness. Jesus established His own memorial when He broke bread and shared the cup, saying, "Do this in remembrance of Me." Every time we take communion, we remember the price of our freedom. We remember the body broken and the blood shed. In our culture of constant distraction, we must intentionally remember what Christ has done. Don't let familiarity breed apathy. Whether you pass by a cross on a wall or take communion at church, pause and remember: Someone loved you enough to die for you.

Reflection Question:
What can you do this week to actively remember and celebrate the freedom Christ purchased for you?
