Remember What God Has Already Done

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus

Psalm 77:11-14 (NLT)
11 But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
12 They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
13 O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you?
14 You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.

Devotional: Philippians 4:6-7 gives us a direct remedy for anxiety: bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and the peace that surpasses understanding will stand guard over your heart and mind. Notice that thanksgiving is not an afterthought in that verse. It is part of the prescription. Gratitude and crippling worry cannot occupy the same space at the same time. The psalmist in Psalm 77 was deeply distressed, but he found his footing again by deliberately calling to mind the works of God in the past. When you do not know what tomorrow holds, look back at what God has already carried you through. His faithfulness yesterday is the foundation of your confidence today.

Reflection: What are two or three specific moments in your life when God came through for you in a way you did not expect? How does remembering those moments change the way you face your current concerns?

Practical Application: Begin a written record of God's faithfulness in your life. List at least three answered prayers or moments of divine provision. Keep adding to it. When worry rises, read the list aloud as an act of worship and remembrance.
