Lavished, Not Earned

1 John 3:1-3
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.
1 John 4:7-10
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Devotional: The word "lavished" in 1 John 3:1 is not accidental. It describes something poured out abundantly, not measured or rationed. God does not distribute His love based on your performance. He does not love you more on your best days or less on your worst. Many people carry the weight of conditional love received from parents, spouses, or communities, and they unknowingly project that same condition onto God. But His love is categorically different. You are called a child of God not because of what you have done, but because of who He is. That identity cannot be revoked by your failures or diminished by your doubts.
Reflection: Where in your life have you been measuring God's love by human standards of condition and performance?
Practical Application: Identify one lie you have believed about your worth before God. Replace it today with the truth of 1 John 3:1, meditating on the word "lavished" and what it means for how God sees you.
