If You Can't Say Something Helpful - Skip It

Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Devotional: There is a clause in this verse that is easy to miss: "according to their needs." Not according to what you think they deserve to hear. Not according to what would make you feel better to say. According to their needs. This shifts the entire purpose of speech away from self-expression and toward genuine service. When you speak to someone, the question is not simply whether your words are true. The question is whether they are helpful, healing, and needed. Some words are true but unnecessary. Some words are accurate but destructive. Wisdom knows the difference. Discipline chooses silence when words would only do harm.
Personal Reflection: Is there a relationship in your life where you consistently say things that are true but not helpful? What would it look like to serve that person better through your words?
Practical Application: Identify one conversation this week where you typically respond with criticism or complaint. Commit to replacing that response with either an encouraging word or intentional silence.
