Dying to the Old Self
Romans 6:1-4
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
The old life does not simply fade away on its own. It must be buried. Paul makes clear that baptism is not a religious formality but a decisive identification with the death of Christ. Just as a burial marks the end of a life, immersion in water marks the end of the person you once were. This is not symbolic wishful thinking. It is a declaration rooted in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. The question worth sitting with today is this: have you truly let the old version of yourself die, or are you still trying to negotiate with it?
Reflection: What part of your old life are you still reluctant to bury?
Application: Write down one habit, attitude, or pattern from your past that you are ready to surrender completely to God today.
