Crossing the Finish Line
Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
This passage shows that Believers are called to run with endurance the race set before them, fixing their eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him.
Devotional: God did not lead the Israelites out of Egypt only to abandon them in the wilderness. He brought them through the Red Sea, through the desert, and ultimately into the land He had promised. In the same way, the God who begins a work in you is committed to completing it. The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a long-distance race that requires endurance, focus, and a willingness to keep your eyes on Jesus rather than on the obstacles alongside the road. Some days the road is smooth. Some days it is hard. But the One who called you to run is the same One who will bring you across the finish line. Keep going.
Reflection: What is threatening to pull your eyes off Jesus in this current season of life? What would it look like to fix your gaze back on Him today?
Application: Read Hebrews 12:1-3 slowly and out loud. Identify one thing -- a distraction, a discouragement, or a weight -- that you need to lay down today in order to run your race with greater freedom and focus.
