The Anointing is Caught through Relationship and Proximity

Reading:  2 Kings 2:1-6
1 When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.”
But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel.
3 The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”
“Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so be quiet.”
4 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”
And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho.
5 The company of the prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?”
“Yes, I know,” he replied, “so be quiet.”
6 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.”
And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on.

Proverbs 13:20
20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Devotional: Elisha's defining characteristic was not his talent or his theological education. It was his refusal to leave Elijah's side. At Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and the Jordan, Elijah offered him an exit and Elisha declined every time. He understood something that many believers miss — the anointing flows through relationship. Proximity to those who walk closely with God is not a passive experience. It shapes you, challenges you, and deposits something in you that cannot be obtained through observation alone. The people you choose to stay close to will determine the direction your life moves. Walk with the wise and you will grow wise.

Reflection: Who are the spiritually mature people in your life whose example and wisdom you are actively learning from? Are you investing in that relationship with intentionality?

Practical Application: Reach out this week to a spiritually mature believer in your life. Ask them one meaningful question about how God has developed their faith, and listen carefully to their answer.
