How God Leads His People Every Step of the Way
There is something deeply familiar about the phrase "ready, set, go." Whether it echoes across a school playground, a backyard driveway, or the starting line of a race, those three words carry a kind of electricity. They signal that something is about to happen. Movement is coming. A journey is beginning.

But what happens when the journey ahead is uncertain? What happens when the road is long, the destination is unclear, and the obstacles seem impossible? That is precisely the situation the children of Israel found themselves in, and their story holds timeless wisdom for anyone who has ever wondered whether God truly knows the way forward.

Ready: God Prepares His People Before They Move
For over 400 years, the Israelites lived as slaves in Egypt. Generation after generation knew nothing but bondage. Yet God had not forgotten them. He had a plan, and when the time was right, He set that plan in motion through a man named Moses.

The process was not instant. Pharaoh resisted. Plagues came. Promises were made and broken. But through it all, God was preparing His people. He was getting them ready. And when the final moment arrived, the Israelites packed their belongings and moved at just the right time, not a moment too soon, not a moment too late.

This is a pattern worth noticing. God rarely drops His people into the middle of a journey without first doing a work of preparation. The waiting seasons, the frustrating seasons, the seasons where nothing seems to be happening -- those are often the seasons where God is doing the most important work. He is getting us ready for what is ahead.

Set: Trusting God's Timing When Waiting Is Hard
Getting ready is one thing. Staying set is another matter entirely.

Once the Israelites were prepared to leave Egypt, they still had to wait for God's precise timing. And that waiting was not passive. It required trust. It required a willingness to hold their position even when every instinct said to move.

In track and field, runners crouch into starting blocks before a race begins. They do not simply stand at the line and wait casually. They position themselves with intention, with their bodies coiled and ready, so that the moment the starting pistol fires, they can explode forward with maximum force. The set position is not wasted time. It is purposeful preparation.

God's timing works the same way. When He tells us to wait, He is not ignoring us. He is positioning us. He knows what lies ahead on the road. He knows what we will need when the moment to move finally arrives. Trusting His timing, even when it is difficult, is an act of faith that honors Him and protects us.

Go: God Never Leads Halfway
When the Israelites finally left Egypt, the challenges did not disappear. They faced the desert, the scorching sun, the uncertainty of an unfamiliar path, and eventually the terrifying sight of the Red Sea in front of them and Pharaoh's army closing in behind them. In that moment, it would have been easy to conclude that God had abandoned them.
But He had not. He never does.

God gave the Israelites something extraordinary to guide them on their journey. During the day, He led them with a pillar of cloud that moved ahead of them, providing shade and direction. At night, He gave them a pillar of fire that offered warmth, light, and guidance through the darkness. Exodus 13:21 describes how the pillar of cloud was always with them during the day and the pillar of fire was always with them at night. Always. Not sometimes. Not when they deserved it. Always.

When the cloud moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped. They learned to follow rather than forge their own path. And that posture of dependence and trust is exactly what God calls His people to in every generation.

God Always Knows the Way
The pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire were not merely navigational tools. They were visible reminders of an invisible truth: God sees His people. He is present with them. He does not lead them to the starting line and then disappear into the crowd.

This truth is just as relevant today as it was in the wilderness of Sinai. The challenges of daily life can feel like a desert. A new school year, a difficult season at work, a health crisis, a relationship that has fractured, a decision that carries enormous weight -- these moments can make us feel exposed and uncertain. But the same God who guided millions of people through a wilderness with a cloud and a fire is the God who walks with us today.

He leads us through His Word, which reveals what is right and shows us how to live. He leads us through prayer, where we can bring our fears, our needs, and our gratitude before Him as we would to a trusted friend. He leads us through the Holy Spirit, who dwells within every believer and provides guidance, comfort, and conviction. And He leads us through the community of faith, through parents, pastors, teachers, and trusted brothers and sisters who help us see clearly when our own vision grows cloudy.

Running the Race Together
The Bible describes the Christian life as a race in Hebrews 12:1, urging believers to run with endurance the course set before them. But this is not a race where we compete against one another. We are all on the same team, all following the same leader, all running toward the same finish line.

The story of the Exodus is ultimately a story about a God who refuses to leave His people behind. He did not free the Israelites from Egypt only to abandon them in the wilderness. He stayed with them through every step, every detour, every moment of doubt, all the way to the promised land.

That is what He does. That is who He is.

So wherever you find yourself today -- whether you are in the ready position, learning to trust in the set position, or finally moving forward -- know this: God always knows the way. And He is with you every step of it.
