2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NLT)
1  You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times.
2  For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
3  They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
4  They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God.
5  They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

TITLE: FORGOTTEN VIRTUES: HONOR.

Mark 6:1-6 (NLT)
1  Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.
2  The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?”
3  Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.
4  Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.”
5  And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any mighty miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
6  And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.

In verse 4, the Greek word that is translated 'honored everywhere except' is the word atimos (at'-eemos).

In the Greek it's the word time (tim-may'), it's spelled time, but it's pronounced “tim-may”.

Respect is Earned, but Honor is Given.

Mark 6:5-6 (NLT)
5  And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any mighty miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.
6  And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.
Now, check this out, it doesn't say He wouldn't, it doesn't say Jesus would not, the Bible says He could not do any miracles except lay hands on a few sick people and heal them and He was amazed, wow, at their lack of faith!

The first group if you are taking notes, the Bible is incredibly clear that we are called to: HONOR OUR PARENTS.

Exodus 20:12 (NLT)
12  “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

The second group we are taught to show honor to if you are taking notes, is we are commanded to show honor: THOSE WHO ARE IN AUTHORITY.

Romans 13:7 (NLT)
7  Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.
I will give you an example:

The third group that I am confident that we need to show honor to – is we HONOR THOSE WHO SERVE.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (NLT)
12  Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance.
13  Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.

Romans 12:10 (NLT2)
10  Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.

The reason our culture is dishonoring is because people aren't honoring God.

Psalm 22:23 (NLT)
23  Praise the LORD, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel!

Isaiah 29:13 (NLT)
13  And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.
